High Flight
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And
danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined
the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds -- and done a hundred things
You
have not dreamed of -- wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit
silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My
eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious burning
blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark,
or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The
high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face
of God.
The sacrifice of your loved ones has stirred the soul of our
nation and, through the pain, our hearts have been opened to a profound truth -
the future is not free, the story of all human progress is one of a struggle
against all odds. We learned again that this America, which Abraham Lincoln
called the last best hope of man on Earth, was built on heroism and noble
sacrifice. It was built by men and women like our seven star voyagers, who
answered a call beyond duty, who gave more than was expected or required, and
who gave it with little thought to worldly reward."
-- President Ronald Reagan, Memorial Service, 01/31/86

William Butler Yeats
An Irish Airman Foresees His Death
I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds
above;
Those that I fight I do not hate
Those that I guard I do not
love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan's poor,
No
likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor
law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely
impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all,
brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of
breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.
